What you may not know is that us women with coily or curly hair have different skin and hair care needs that women with straight hair. Their hair structure is different and in addition to that, their hair follicle shapes are different. They are crescent shaped as opposed to round.

This crescent shaped follicle causes the hair to curl and to exit the epidermis at an angle, which causes the hair to grow in it’s coily or curly pattern rather than straight out.  In fact it is not uncommon for women with coily or coily hair to have crescent shaped hair follicles of varying degrees of tightness The tighter the follicle shape, the tighter the curl pattern of the hair.  For example women with 4C hair may have hair follicles that are so tight that they appear to be straight lines.

Other hair removal procedures and products don’t address these differences and unfortunately, this is the primary reason women with coily and curly hair types experience hair bumps, ingrown hairs, scars and discoloration.
